Iowa Western Community College STEM Students Receive Boost

OMAHA, Neb. (MAY 5, 2016) – For the second year in a row, WoodmenLife has funded six $1,000 scholarships per year for students studying Information Technology (IT) at Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) to address the shortage of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) professionals in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area.

“We see these scholarships as doing our part to fill the pipeline with educated, career-minded people who will seek out a company like ours who values giving back to our community,” said Doug Gibbs, Service Delivery Manager in the Business Technology Division at WoodmenLife.

Gibbs and WoodmenLife CIO Jerry Smolinski will be making the $6,000 check presentation in the WoodmenLife Tower lobby at 2 p.m. today.

According to Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce, by 2018, Iowa will demand a total of 67,330 STEM jobs, a 16 percent increase from 2008. Nebraska will require 44,130 STEM jobs, a four percent increase from 2008.
