Local Hero Shines Bright: Sylvester’s Sherry Waldrop Claims Prestigious WoodmenLife National Award
In a celebration of extraordinary community service, Sylvester, Georgia’s own Sherry Waldrop has been crowned WoodmenLife’s National Fraternalist of the Year, recognizing her remarkable dedication to transforming lives across her community.
The coveted Fraternalist of the Year Award isn’t just another accolade – it’s WoodmenLife’s highest honor for members who exemplify the heart and soul of community service. Waldrop’s selection from thousands of dedicated WoodmenLife members nationwide speaks volumes about her exceptional impact on the Sylvester community.
“Some people talk about making a difference. Sherry Waldrop lives it every single day,” declared Robby Molony, Vice President, Fraternal at WoodmenLife. “Her tireless volunteerism has created ripples of positive change throughout Sylvester, touching the lives of students, seniors, First Responders, and families in need. She’s the living embodiment of WoodmenLife’s mission.”
As a 13-year standout within WoodmenLife Chapter 172, Waldrop’s community initiatives read like a masterclass in compassionate action. Her brainchild, the innovative Worth RAMS Award at Worth Middle School, celebrates students who might not top the academic charts but showcase outstanding character, determination, and positive influence – qualities that truly matter in tomorrow’s leaders.
Waldrop’s heart for service stretches across generations. From orchestrating heartwarming Valentine’s Day celebrations for assisted living residents (complete with thoughtful “care bags” for often-overlooked staff members) to coordinating community-wide appreciation events for local heroes in EMT, Fire, Sheriff, and Police departments – her impact knows no bounds.
Drawing from her background as an educator, Waldrop champions children facing hardship. She’s the driving force behind a free school supplies initiative and personally shops for and packs bi-weekly backpacks ensuring food-insecure students don’t go hungry at home. Her involvement with “Peanut Butter and Jesus” helps coordinate an astonishing 1,800+ weekend lunches for community members in need.
Even in honoring those who’ve passed, Waldrop’s dedication shines through. Working alongside the local high school ROTC program, she helps ensure Veterans’ graves receive the recognition they deserve with flag placements for Memorial and Veterans Days.
