Lavonia Students Turn WoodmenLife Prize Into High Flying STEM Fun
LAVONIA, Ga. – Lavonia Elementary School is putting its $2,500 Grand Prize win from WoodmenLife’s America Is… Video Contest to inspiring use, giving every student hands‑on STEM experiences that make learning unforgettable.
With the winnings, the school is enhancing its popular Egg Drop Challenge, where students engineer protective designs using materials like rice, cotton, bubble wrap, and packing peanuts before watching their creations drop from 20 to 75 feet. The City of Lavonia and the Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) also help elevate the excitement by bringing bucket trucks to the event.
Students are also gearing up for Volcano Day, crafting custom volcanoes from birthday hats and experimenting with baking soda, vinegar, and food coloring to create colorful eruptions outdoors. Funds will also support new 3D‑printer filament and components, expanding students’ opportunities to design and build.
“WoodmenLife’s support has truly elevated our STEM programs,” said Tammy Lathan, STEM Instructor. “From soaring egg drops to erupting volcanoes, these experiences spark creativity and confidence in our students. We are incredibly grateful for this opportunity.”
Lavonia’s winning video is part of WoodmenLife’s nationwide contest, which saw 74 entries and more than 9,000 votes celebrating patriotism and creativity among students nationwide.
