What is it About Falcons?
This is the “wait and see” phase of the falcon season – that 30 or so day period during incubation where we only see the falcons sit on the nest. And yet we tune in to the falcon cam. Why?
What’s so fascinating?
The Atlanta Falcons. The Falcon super hero. Even Saturday Night Live had The Falconer.
Falconry is a serious hobby for some – it dates back to at least 2200 BC, if not farther.
What inspires such loyalty and fandom?
- Falcons are fast. They’ve been clocked at 242 miles per hour!
- Peregrine falcons are nearly everywhere. They’re found on every continent except Antarctica.
- Peregrine falcons are strikingly beautiful. They are one of the largest falcons, with long, pointed wings and a long tail. Adults are blue-gray above with barred underparts and a dark head with thick sideburns. Juveniles are heavily marked, with vertical streaks instead of horizontal bars on the breast.
