Woodmen Tower Falcons Banded

Omaha, Neb.– After the Woodmen Tower falcons were banded and blood-tested this morning it was determined that all five falcons this year are female. Gender is determined solely on the size of the falcon’s feet. Raptor Recovery Nebraskaand the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission banded the chicks and performed health checks. This is the 23rd year in which peregrine falcons have chosen to nest atop the Tower and the sixth year in which falcon pair Zeus and Hera have produced offspring.

For the first time ever, Woodmen of the World (WOW) will host its annual falcon-naming contest entirely on Facebook. The on-line contest began this morning after it was determined that all five falcon chicks are female.

Fans can post their group of five names on the Woodmen of the World Facebook wall through noon on Friday, June 10. Based on comments, likes and a general review from an internal WOW committee, the top five groups will be re-posted in the form of a Facebook “Question” on the WOW wall, where fans can then vote for their favorite. The top five selections will be posted and voting will begin on Monday, June 13 and last through noon, on Friday, June 17. The winner will be announced on Monday, June 20 via Facebook, followed by Twitter and the FalconWatch blog.
