WOODMEN TOWER FALCONS BANDED; GENDERS DETERMINED

After the Woodmen Tower falcons were banded and blood-tested this morning it was determined that there are two female falcons and two male falcons. Gender is determined solely on the size of the falcon’s feet. Raptor Recovery Nebraska and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission banded the chicks and performed health checks. This is the 26th year in which peregrine falcons have chosen to nest atop the Tower and the third year in which falcon pair Mintaka and Hera have produced offspring.

Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society will host its annual falcon-naming contest entirely on Woodmen’s Facebook Fan page, WOWInsurance, under the “Name the Falcons” contest tab. The online contest began this afternoon after it was determined that there are two female falcons and two male falcons.

Fans may enter their group of four names on the Woodmen of the World Facebook “Name the Falcons” contest tab through noon on Thursday, May 29. After an internal Woodmen of the World committee reviews the names, the top five groups will be re-posted on the WOWInsurance Facebook “Name the Falcons” contest tab, where fans can then vote for their favorite. The top five selections will be posted and voting will begin on Wednesday, June 4 and last through noon, on Wednesday, June 11. The winner will be announced on Thursday, June 12 via Facebook, followed by Twitter @WOWInsurance and the FalconWatch blog.
