Woodmen Tower Falcons Banded; Genders Announced
Omaha, Neb. – After the Woodmen Tower falcon chicks were banded and blood-tested this morning it was determined that there are 3 female falcons and 1 male falcon. Gender is determined solely on the size of the falcon’s feet. Fontenelle Forest Raptor Recovery Nebraska and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission banded the chicks and performed health checks. This is the 27th year in which peregrine falcons have chosen to nest atop the Tower and produce offspring. The current male falcon has returned to the tower for three years, while the female falcon, Charity, is new this year.
Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society will host its annual falcon-naming contest entirely on Woodmen’s Facebook Fan page under the “Name the Falcons” contest tab. The online contest began this afternoon after the chicks’ genders were determined.
Fans may enter their group of four names on the Woodmen of the World Facebook “Name the Falcons” contest tab through noon on Wednesday, June 3. After an internal Woodmen of the World committee reviews the names, the top five groups will be re-posted on the Facebook “Name the Falcons” contest tab, where fans can then vote for their favorite. The top five selections will be posted and voting will begin on Monday, June 8 and last through noon, on Monday, June 15. The winner will be announced on Tuesday, June 16 via Facebook, followed by Twitter and the Falcon Watch blog.
