Welcome Woodmen Tower Falcons Cass, Harney, Farnam, Dodge, Douglas
Omaha, NE – Woodmen of the World is proud to
announce the names of the newest batch of Woodmen Tower falcon chicks. The young peregrines
were named in honor of five Omaha streets, all of which run through
downtown. Their names are:
- Cass, female, band #46/U
- Harney, female, #47/U
- Farnam, male, #07/R
- Dodge, male, #08/R
- Douglas, male, #09/R
These names represent a part of Omaha’s history – the
people who used to live on them, and those who lived before our time.
According to the Douglas County Historical Society, Dodge Street got its
name from Augustus Caesar Dodge, a U.S. Senator from Iowa, who was a strong
supporter of westward expansion beyond the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean. Douglas Street was named after Stephen A. Douglas, an influential
U.S. Senator from Illinois who championed the
Kansas-Nebraska Bill that resulted in Nebraska becoming an
organized territory. Henry Farnam
was a principal promoter of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad.
Farnam was Omaha’s original “main”
street. Cass street was named after
politician, statesman, and military officer, General Lewis Cass. Harney street was named after General William S. Harney, a career
army officer and Indian fighter.
Woodmen of the
World held a Facebook contest to name the chicks. During the contest period
fans submitted their group of five names on the Woodmen of the World Facebook
page (WOWInsurance) contest tab. An internal Woodmen of the World committee
reviewed and selected the top five group name entries. These top five entries
were posted on the WOWInsurance Facebook page contest tab, where fans voted for
their favorite. The winning name suggestions were submitted by Travis Wurtele
(Union Pacific Railroad, Sales Manager).
The falcons have left the nest and will be flying
