Peregrine Falcons to be Banded at WoodmenLife Tower
WoodmenLife welcomes four new falcons to the family at their annual banding ceremony on Friday, May 19 on the 20th floor of the WoodmenLife Tower.
Peregrine falcons have called the WoodmenLife Tower home for the past 29 years. At the ceremony, the Fontenelle Forest Raptor Recovery and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will band each falcon, take their blood and determine genders. It’s likely the WoodmenLife falcons will be the only ones banded in Nebraska this year – the pair at the Capitol building in Lincoln had a late start and abandoned their eggs for two days, but have since been incubating.
WoodmenLife will present a $500 donation to Raptor Recovery and a $250 donation to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to thank them for the work with the peregrine falcons.
Once the genders are determined, WoodmenLife will hold their annual falcon naming contest on their Facebook page. Fans can enter a group of four names starting after the banding ceremony through noon on Friday, May 26. Then, an internal WoodmenLife committee will review the submissions and select the top five groups of names to be re-posted on the Facebook page. Voting on the top five groups will run from noon on Thursday, June 1 through noon on Thursday, June 8. The winner will be announced on Friday, June 9 on Facebook, Twitter and the RealWoodmenLife blog.
