Omaha North Students Learn About In-Demand Financial Careers and Present Findings to Woodmen of the World Executives

Omaha North Academy of Finance students at Woodmen of the World Presentations and Luncheon, April 23, 2015.

Omaha, Neb. – Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society has partnered with Omaha North’s Academy of Finance to provide students hands-on experience with actuarial and investment professionals.

Omaha North seniors gave multimedia presentations to Woodmen of the World executives, OPS officials and guests on Thursday, April 23 at the Woodmen Tower in downtown Omaha. The students presented what they learned about the actuarial function and about the types of investments insurance organizations should consider. Additionally, each of the twelve students shared his or her own web-based biography, showcasing personal achievements and career goals. Following the presentations, Rebecca Brei, investment professional, entrepreneur and Omaha North graduate, spoke on the opportunities a career in finance has provided her. The students were then recognized with certificates of achievement.

“The partnership between Omaha North and Woodmen allows the students to learn about not just the technical skills needed for Investment and Actuarial careers, but also about the communication, cooperation and professionalism needed to get things done in a real-world financial setting,” said Randy Rotschafer, VP Actuary and Chief Actuary, Woodmen of the World, “I was particularly impressed at how engaged the students became as they interacted with the Investment and Actuarial associates.”

This partnership helps Omaha North to better prepare students for Omaha-based careers that offer higher wages, largely due to the technical expertise required to perform in these jobs. According to the Bureau of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook, the employment of actuaries is projected to grow 26 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations. Woodmen of the World helps give students a better understanding of the actuarial and investment careers, promotes finance education among students, and provides opportunities for students to learn from professionals in the field.
