A Banding We Will Go
Finally, it’s that time. On June 3, we will be banding our newest residents who live atop the WoodmenLife Tower. It’s exciting to watch the annual event because it shows how far the peregrine falcons have come since their near extinction a generation ago.
Banding will take place at 10 a.m. (CST) and run about an hour, and we will stream it live on WoodmenLife’s Facebook page. If you’re eager to see how the banding is done, you can check out previous banding day videos.
Banding lets interested parties keep track of the falcons as they spread their wings and their ranges. Who knows where this year’s birds will travel?
While the ceremony is underway, the live stream FalconCam will be shut down. We will clean the window and make sure the camera is working properly. Doing the maintenance during banding limits disturbances to the falcons.
The banding will be done by our friends from Fontenelle Forest’s Raptor Recovery and Nebraska Game and Parks. They are the experts, and we follow their lead.
Time to Pick a Name (or Three)
After banding, keep checking back for gender announcements and information about 2019 Name the Falcons contest. Submissions will begin June 4th and can be made until DATE, through Website Link. Voting for the top five sets of names will begin on DATE, and run through DATE.
The winning names will be announced on DATE.
